My New Year Resolutions 2019!!

Another year has gone by and 2019 is here!!!

I love making resolutions! It makes me look forward to a better me by the end of the year. Of course, some resolutions are continued from last year’s list and the rest are lessons learnt during the year.

My 2019 resolutions are …

-          Following a sattvic diet
-          Time management
-          Minimalist wardrobe and life
-          Home Organization
-          Gardening

1) To follow a sattvic diet:

First of all, what is Sattvic diet?

According to Wikipedia:
A sattvic diet is meant to include foods and eating habits that are "pure, essential, natural, vital, energy-containing, clean, conscious, true, honest, wise". A sattvic diet can also exemplify the religious principle of Ahimsa, the doctrine of non-violence, or not causing harm to other living things, which is one reason why yogis often follow a vegetarian diet.

This is hard!

It is very difficult to follow this diet, especially when you live with a family where everyone meets for dinner parties every fortnight and you have to explain to people why you aren’t munching on the chips or why aren’t you loading your plate with manchurians, fried rice, noodles and so on.

As if this wasn't enough we bond at work over regular team lunches, team outings, pizza parties, samosa parties, birthday parties and so on.

Switching to a sattvic diet cannot happen overnight. Hence it ranks number 1 on my resolution list this year.

2) Time Management:

I don't have enough time!

Let me justify,
-  I work full time in an IT company with a ridiculous amount of work, endless deadlines and endless pressure all throughout the week

- Followed by 16 hour Yoga teacher training classes every weekend which requires me to prepare for tests, assignments, and exams along with asana practices every day.

- Not to mention cooking (thankfully with my mother in law’s help)

- Cleaning, tidying and organizing my home.

- Doing all the laundry

- Plus spending time with my family. If my husband and I weren't working in the same place I doubt I would be able to talk to him.

So you see I need to manage my time. I have so much to do in a day that I don’t have time for myself.

I want my day to be like...

Waking up early morning, practice yoga in the peaceful silence, patiently prepare breakfast and lunch for the family with all ingredients at hand in my clean kitchen, sip my tea while checking the news, have a blissful shower and get ready for the day, put on clothes that are washed, dried, pressed and laid out the night before. Glide through my day at work and come home to clean and tidy space and go to bed with a book in hand and a warm cup of tea.

How dreamy!

The only way to achieve this is to be PREPARED.
Therefore, this year I need to plan out all the housework, meal preps,  and my work.

3) Minimalist wardrobe and life:

I love shopping! Who doesn’t?
But, I hate the clutter. Who does?

Something I have realized quite recently is that we consume so much!! All thanks to home delivery of goods which makes us fail to realize that all these things that we buy occupy a lot of space in our lives.

Have you ever thought through your purchase before you click on the Buy button?

It's not really our fault. It all starts with adding one item of clothing into the cart, then you'll need another to match the first item and then you click a few more colors to match another item in your wardrobe and before you know it you have bought so much stuff without thinking where to store these things.

Reality check!
Are you able to see all the clothes you own when you open your closet door?

A closet jam packed full of clothes, a room full of purchased items that you don’t necessarily need. A living room full of furniture that you don’t really use. All these things can cause nothing but clutter in your home and your mind.

In short, the state of your house is the state of your mind!

Hence, this year I’m on a journey to adopt a minimalist lifestyle.

4) Home organization:

I love to clean and organize but still, my house is never the same every day.

Living with a family comes with a constant struggle to maintain a clean and tidy home.
I tidy my bedroom every morning and leave for the day, I swear it is the only room  that remains tidy.No matter how many times I clean the kitchen it will get messy in no time, the living room will have everything from the delivered online orders to the set of mails, receipts, old newspapers, ironed clothes and what not.

This year I must come up with a new cleaning schedule and a realistic way to tackle all clutter.

5) Gardening:

Growing up I was always surrounded by plants. I watched my grandpa pruning and weeding out plants, my mother would spend her free time re-potting plants and arranging flowering pots all around the house. I was in charge of watering these plants every day.

So you can imagine my shock when I came to live in my husband’s family apartment, they had one Tulsi plant and that’s it! I missed the greenery in my home.

Within a week my husband and I ordered a few plants online, we consulted my mom to advice us,  we ordered bigger pots, put on our gloves, hat, got out our tools and got to work. We ended up creating a small garden of our own.

But as the months passed by, we realized that plants don’t grow on their own like we expected them to. Just watering them is not enough! Successful gardening requires planning, problem solving and creativity.

And so, it had to be added to my list!

I will be sharing my progress on each of these resolutions in the future blog posts.
Stay tuned!

P. S :- I must thank my cousin who has a wonderful garden boutique of her own with the most beautiful plants which have made my home and desk look a lot better.
