Hemantha Ritucharya - 7 tips to take care of yourself this season.
Christmas is upon us and it is that time of the year where everyone is wrapping up, taking a break, spending time with family and friends.
In this season of early winter where the winds are heavy and nights are longer, there are certain specific ways recommended by Ayurveda to take care of yourself and your family.
Hemantha Ritucharya (Early Winter - Seasonal regimen)
I have been studying Ayurveda as part of my yoga teacher training program and have learnt a few health tips to maintain myself in each season. Believe me, when you make few changes to your diet and the environment around you, the difference you feel is huge!!
So here are things I do to take care of myself and my family!
1) Eating foods that are predominantly sweet, sour and salt tastes.
2) Since digestive system is at its peak this season we must eat heavier foods such as meat products, soups with fats and food containing wheat such as chapathis, parathas and black gram (My mom makes the best black channa curry. I will try to give the recipe in a future post).
3) Wine prepared with jaggery should be consumed in this season. I am lucky to get this wine from my brother who enjoys preparing it.
Pineapple Wine (Yum)!!
4) Thick sheets made up cotton, wool or silk that are light weight should be used to while sleeping.
We purchased these wonderful duvet from Bed, Bath and Beyond and they are perfectly light weight and cozy.
5) Exposure to sunlight should be done judiciously.
I always carry a hat or an umbrella when I know I'll be under the sun for a long time. It is not recommended to have direct sunlight falling on your head for a long duration of time.
6) Always wear slippers.
We all wear sandals and shoes outside our homes. it is also important to cover your feet at home.
I wear these comfortable flip flops that have a thick sole, these are easy to walk in and to clean around the house.
7) Take bath only in warm water.
I don't know anyone who doesn't want a warm bath in this season. Not only bathing, rinse your mouth with warm water.
Hope these tips are easy and simple to follow till the end on this season.
Merry Christmas to you all 😊!!!
